Steps To A Nicer Smile

nicer smileWho doesn’t want a brighter, whiter smile?  A nice smile can make you look younger and healthier. Here are seven steps to a nicer smile.

  1. Brush Regularly – Brushing is the most important part of dental hygiene.  It is a way to remove food particles that can lead to plaque.  It also cleans the surfaces of teeth and freshens breath.  Toothpaste with fluoride can help to strengthen tooth enamel. Brush at least twice a day for two minutes.
  2. Floss Daily – Flossing removes all the food and bacteria from in between your teeth that your toothbrush may miss.  It helps to prevent gum disease.  You should floss at least once a day before bedtime, but more if possible.
  3. Visit The Dentist – See your dentist at least twice a year for dental cleanings and checkups. Your dentist can spot the early signs of gum disease and cavities. If you have any health conditions that put you at risk for dental problems, you may need to see your dentist more often.
  4. Eat Healthy Foods – Include plenty of dairy and calcium rich foods in your diet to maintain strong bones and teeth. Vitamin C in fruits will boost gum health. Stay away from sugary and sticky foods and brush immediately afterward if you do eat them.
  5. Don’t Use Tobacco – People who smoke are four times more likely than nonsmokers to have gum disease.  Using smokeless tobacco increases risk for oral cancer.  These products contribute to bad breath as well.
  6. Whiten Teeth – Whitening teeth is safe and will help your teeth look brighter. Talk to your dentist before you start any whitening procedures and don’t go overboard.
  7. Cosmetic Procedures – Having stained, crooked, or missing teeth affects your smile and confidence. Veneers can improve the appearance of teeth. Cosmetic dentistry can be costly though, and is not normally covered by insurance.

Cosmetic Dental Fillings

cosmetic dental fillingsIf you get a cavity, your dentist will fill it with some sort of filling after drilling it out. There are different types of fillings.  Cosmetic dental fillings, or white fillings (also known as composite resins), are what many dentists use these days as it can greatly improve your smile. They are also more durable.

Silver fillings, amalgams and metal fillings are all the same thing.  If you have these, they are probably old and may even have cracks, splits or gaps.  Silver fillings can be replaced with white fillings as long as there is enough healthy tooth structure left.

White fillings are not just for repairing the tooth after a filling.  This material can also be used to fill in gaps, rough edges and even smooth out uneven surfaces.

If you need a filling, be sure to talk to your dentist about the options and if cosmetic dental fillings will work best for you.

Dental Veneers – Should I Get Them Or Not?

Dental veneers are a popular choice among people nowadays in treating misalignment or discoloration of their teeth. These veneers are sometimes called porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates.  A dental veneer is made up of thin, tooth colored material and is a customized shell of your tooth.  They are used to improve the tooth’s appearance.

dental veneersTo choose the best dental veneers you need to consult your dentist to find out what is best for you. Porcelain veneers have stain-resistant properties and can withstand stains from the different kinds of foods you eat.  However, resin veneers are thinner than porcelain and require removal of some of your tooth’s surface before placing it.  Bear in mind that in making a choice you need to listen to your dentist to receive the best outcome from the procedure.

Here are few cases that make ideal situations for the placement of dental veneers-

  1. Discolored teeth caused by root canal treatment. Stains from medications like tetracycline, excessive use of fluoride from toothpaste or from foods you eat.
  2. Teeth that are broken, chipped, misaligned or irregular in shape.
  3. Teeth that have gaps that are too far between.

There are advantages and disadvantages of having dental veneers.

  1. They appear very natural just like your original tooth.
  2. They are stain-resistant most especially the porcelain veneers.
  3. Most of all, they can improve your appearance.

  1.  High procedural expenses.
  2. Irreversible procedure as veneers cannot be repaired or fixed once installed.
  3. Teeth become sensitive to hot and cold food and drinks since enamel has been removed.
  4. You cannot bite your nails or eat solid foods if you have veneers.
  5. You can develop dental decay even if you have veneers.

Dental veneers last up to 5-10 years with proper dental care and after this time frame they will need to be replaced.  Just follow good oral hygiene practices including brushing and flossing properly.  Avoid staining foods.  You need to be cautious enough when you have veneers so that your expenses are not in vain. The cost for this procedure depends on the location of your tooth.

Some dentists offer you alternatives to dental veneers so that your teeth have a stronger restoration that will not easily break or damage. This alternative is called a dental crown. The crown covers the tooth completely on all its sides. It is just like a tooth being covered totally by a porcelain tooth veneer. This is a stronger option of covering a tooth. Another thing is that dental crowns can be customized according to patients’ choice so that they can get the best smile they have always wanted.

So what are you waiting for? Visit your nearest dental clinic and discuss with your dentist the best option for dental veneers. But don’t forget to take into consideration all the factors before deciding to undergo this kind of a procedure.

Periodontal Plastic Surgery

Have you ever heard about periodontal plastic surgery?  Your gums are what protect your teeth from disease and help to hold your teeth in place.  But some people don’t like the way their gums and teeth look.  There are some procedures that can be done surgically to remedy these issues.

Gum tissue loss20945534-beauty-portrait-portrait-of-cute-happy-young-brunette-girl-isolated, or gum recession, can cause tooth sensitivity and can cause the teeth to look too long. Soft tissue (gum) grafts can be designed to cover exposed roots which will make your teeth less sensitive, and reduce the possibility of root cavities.  It will also make your smile look longer.

If you have the opposite problem, the gum line appears to be creeping down over the teeth, making them appear shorter, crown lengthening can correct this. This is done by re-contouring your gums to the proper height and leave you with a more attractive smile.
