Sugar Smart App Tells You How Much Sugar Your Child Consumes

sugar smartThe Change4Life healthy eating campaign in the United Kingdom has released a free app that scans the barcodes of food and beverages and then tells you how much sugar the products have in them.  This app is called Sugar Smart, and is a way to help decrease the amount of tooth decay in children.

The recommended daily maximum sugar intake for children is between 19 to 30 grams. Many foods and drinks that our children consume have much more than this in one product alone!

The app will help parents to see what their children are consuming that contains the most sugar so they can make better choices for them. It also gives hints and tips on how to cut down on sugar.

How can I cut down on sugar?

Sugar is in just about everything that we love to eat.  But according to health guidelines, only 10 percent of a person’s daily calories should come from sugar. This includes natural sugars like in fruit juice.

Sugar causes tooth decay but even more than that it is a source of unwanted calories that cause weight gain and obesity.  Obesity raises the risk of hea24252281-cherry-topping-cakert disease, type 2 diabetes and many cancers. Cutting down on sugar could make a dramatic impact on our waistlines and the health of the whole nation.

So how can we cut down on sugar?  Sugary drinks are one of the biggest problems.  Something about sugar sweetened drinks like soda, energy drinks, even sports drinks and fruit juice appear to encourage over consumption of sugar. Don’t drink your calories.  If you can stay away from sugary drinks, this will be a huge step in the right direction.

Another way to cut down on sugar is to eat more fiber. Fruits and vegetables, whole grain breads, cereals and pasta should be on the menu each day.

Sugary Drinks May Affects Children’s Memory

Sugary drinks like soda, juice, sports drinks and energy drinks may be doing more damage to your children’s teeth than just causing tooth decay and cavities. Some recent research has shown that it may actually be damaging their brains.

The study was done with rats. Researchers fed adult and adolescent rats sweetened beverages and after only one month the adolescent rats memory was impaired.

So how much is too much sugar? The average American eats about 22 teaspoons of sugar each day.  With teenagers consuming 34 teaspoons.  Children’s sugar intake should be limited to 4 teaspoons a day and teens between 5-9 teaspoons.

The next time you think about allowing the soda, sports drinks or even juice for your young child, think again.  Consider an alternative.  The best thing your children can drink is water.
